Superbubbles – The Many Forms of Contemporary Comics
26 September 2024 – 5 January 2025
Poikilo Art Museum

In the exhibited comics, spatiality manifests itself not only as the internal space of images and manuscripts, but also as three-dimensionality, movement and temporality. In the museum space, the comics can come alive and visitors can literally walk inside the worlds they portray. The exhibition also raises awareness of various publishing formats of comics and spaces for reading comics.

The artists featured in this exhibition are Terhi Ekebom, Jyrki Heikkinen, Ivanda Jansone, Reijo Kärkkäinen, Kaisa and Christoffer Leka, Jarno Latva-Nikkola, Eeva Meltio, Tommi Musturi, Pauliina Mäkelä, Kati Rapia, Heikki Rönkkö, Aino Sutinen, Tuomas Tiainen and Amanda Vähämäki.

The exhibited pieces mainly represent the most recent work of the artists, but a few older gems are also included. Superbubbles celebrates the 20th anniversary of the contemporary comics association and artist collective Kutikuti, and is part of the association’s three-year project Nykysarjakuvan suunnat (Trends in Modern Comics) (2023–2025). The project, supported by the Kone Foundation, raises awareness of and improves the accessibility of modern comics.

Kuopio Art Museum is simultaneously holding a parallel exhibition called Rebellion of the Panels.

The exhibition has received a government grant from the Finnish Heritage Agency. It is supported by Association of Visual Communication Designers in Finland, Grafia.
